Rooftop Salsa creator Samson Mulugeta is one of the founding members of the Johannesburg salsa community. He teamed up with Afromambo in 2007 to launch the city’s first regular salsa venue at his Melville Grill Restaurant with Saturday night parties that helped salsa take root in Jozi.
A year ago, Samson launched Rooftop Salsa at the Maboneng Pricinct, Johannesburg’s ground-breaking urban mixed-use community, a cultural hub known for its mix of galleries, artist studios, creative venues, offices and retail spaces.
The rooftop bar of the Canteen Restaurant at Maboneng is the home of salsa in South Africa's biggest city, where scores of dancers spend their Sunday afternoons swaying to the hypnotic rhythms of Afro-Cuban tunes.
Samson is the former Africa Bureau Chief for New York Newsday who has now transitioned to filmmaking. Combining his two passions - salsa and journalism - Samson has a treasure trove of images and videos of the Joburg salsa community that he has been documenting since the birth of the dance scene in Johannesburg.
